Compress an image to an exact size

Got a “file too large” error? Pick the limit, drop your photo, and get a JPG under it — exact to the byte, never uploaded.

KB

5 to 5000 KB.

How to use it

  1. Enter the size limit from the form (5 to 5000 KB) or pick a preset.
  2. If the form asks for exact pixels, tick “Resize to exact pixels”, enter the width and height, and pick Fit, Crop or Stretch.
  3. Choose or drop a JPG, PNG or WebP photo.
  4. Check the preview and the pixel size and quality under it, then download the JPG.

How it works

The tool tries JPG quality levels to find the sharpest version under your limit. If even low quality is too big, it shrinks the pixel dimensions, keeping the photo's shape. With exact pixels on, only the quality is lowered; if it still does not fit, you see the smallest size possible. Sizes use 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so the result also fits forms that count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes.

Common problems

If the result looks blurry or blocky, the limit is tight for this photo. Raise the limit if the form allows it.

For a passport or visa photo with head-size rules, use the passport photo resizer, which is made for those sizes. This tool crops only from the centre and does not find your face. To set a DPI such as 300, compress first, then use change image DPI.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, so the photo stays on your phone or computer.

Fit, Crop or Stretch: which should I pick?

Fit keeps the whole photo and adds white bars. Crop fills the size and trims the edges. Stretch fills it but can make faces look wider or thinner. Small photos made larger can look soft.

Why is my result a JPG?

JPG gives the smallest files for photos, and nearly every form accepts it. Transparent areas in PNG files become white. For iPhone HEIC photos, use HEIC to JPG first.

My photo is already under the limit. Should I still use this?

The tool tells you when your original already fits; if the form accepts its file type, upload it as is. The new JPG can even be larger than the original.

The form wants a PDF. What should I use?

Use images to PDF under a KB limit to put one or more photos into a PDF that fits. If you already have a PDF, use compress a PDF to an exact size.
